Job Description
We are looking for a detail-oriented Researcher & Scriptwriter with a strong background in Nigerian history for a podcast.
The ideal candidate will have experience in archival research, narrative writing, scriptwriting and fact-checking. You must have excellent written communication skills, a meticulous eye for detail and a genuine understanding of the history you are writing about.
Key Responsibilities
1. Research
Research historical and contemporary Nigerian events using primary and credible secondary sources to build complete, verified accounts of each topic.
Establish the historical roots of current affairs.
Support the podcast host with research and briefing materials for interviews.
Submit research to the Producer for review, incorporate feedback and begin researching the next topic while the previous one is under review.
Maintain clear, traceable records of sources to ensure every claim can be verified.
2. Writing & Scripting
Write at least one episode script per week, collaborating with the existing scriptwriter to share the workload.
Develop and edit engaging, story-led scripts that present history as a narrative rather than a list of facts, with a clear storyline, tension and perspective.
Maintain an analytical and thoughtful tone while keeping scripts warm, engaging and conversational.
Write in strict British English and maintain a consistent voice across episodes.
Ensure neutral, factual and non-defamatory framing when covering political and institutional subjects.
3. Fact-checking & Accuracy
Verify every name, date, title, figure and quotation against credible sources before a script is approved.
Identify unsupported claims and recommend accurate, evidence-based alternatives.
Maintain high editorial standards, ensuring all facts are accurate, verifiable and properly documented.
4. Visual & Archive Sourcing
Source relevant images, archival footage and video materials for each documentary episode.
Document the source and any usage restrictions associated with each asset.
Identify and flag potential copyright or usage rights concerns early.
Requirements
Open to candidates based in Lagos or Abuja.
A degree in History, Journalism, Law, Political Science or a related field.
Proven experience in archival and primary-source research.
Demonstrated experience writing non-fiction scripts for podcasts, videos, broadcasts or related media.
A meticulous approach to fact-checking, research and source verification.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a strong command of British English.
Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities.
Ability to manage a continuous workload and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
A genuine passion for Nigerian history, research and storytelling.
