Five years ago, Femme Africa launched with our very first all-female music showcase and the girls came out and showed up to celebrate the hottest female talent in Nigeria. Back then, Femme Africa was simply an answer to the question: Why isn’t there a space for more young, amazing women to support female-owned businesses, have fun and listen to female artists that have otherwise been sidelined in mainstream media?
It was a time where we were fed up with the low representation and visibility of women in the creative scene. We saw how female voices, needs and wants are routinely pushed to the side and ranked low in importance. We were desperate for a change, so we decided to up the ante and expand the vision.
Today, Femme Africa is a full-fledged media company that creates content, builds community and empowers young Gen Z and millennial women to build lives on their own terms. In such a short time, we’ve launched iconic merch , supported fresh talent with initiates such as The Sound Lab and She Runs The Boards , funded small businesses, documented the culture through a feminist lens and created a festival.
It’s not been easy but we’re incredibly proud of the work we do and it’s why we decided to celebrate our fifth anniversary with some of the people who’ve been instrumental in our journey.
We hosted 40 guests for an intimate dinner at The Wine Lab with cocktails and food. Disposable cameras from Partiful were dotted around the tables to give our guests an opportunity to capture candid moments.
